Martin Kay
Martin Kay is a Brisbane based saxophonist, clarinetist and composer with interests in contemporary chamber music, improvisation and composition. He is a key member of Continuum Saxophone Quartet, Song Fwaa, The Fantastic Terrific Munkle, and Forage. An important aspect of all of these groups is a focus on original music, whether by the members or through commissioning composers.
Martin has maintained a diverse freelance career, spanning multiple genres, with a particular highlight being casual work with the Sydney Symphony, the Australian Opera and Ballet, The Malaysian Philharmonic, The Tasmanian symphony, and the Auckland Philharmonic Orchestras.
After completing his Masters in classical saxophone performance, Martin focused on improvisation and composition. In 2001 he studied privately in New York City in 2001 funded by a Churchill Fellowship. In 2016, he attended the Banff International program for Jazz and creative music curated by Vijay Iyer. In 2020, Martin received a his Doctor of Musical Arts in composition from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. He currently lectures in classical saxophone at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music.
